The Uganda U20 team, the Hippos, opened their Under 20 African Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-1 win over Central Africa Republic in a clash staged on Monday at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium, Egypt.
The Jackson Mayanja had a dominant display from the onset but had no result to show for it with the first half ending in a goalless draw. The domination continued in the second half with Uganda finding the back just a minute after the resumption but Apollo Kakogwe strike was ruled out for offside.

The Ugandans were never going to be denied a minute later when captain Isma Mugulusi scored from close range after getting to the end of a Ssematimba’s header. While Mugulusi almost doubled his and Ugandan’s lead two minutes later after missing the target by a whisker, the dominance of the East African nation was to see Ssematimba ferocious effort in the 69th-minute ricochet off the post.

The second goal however came in the 74th minute when John Paul Dembe beat off a CAR defender before curling into the top left corner. While Boris Gbenou got the consolation for the Central African Republic late on, Uganda held on for the three points in their first group game.
Uganda will hope for the same results when they return to action on Thursday to face Congo Brazzaville.
