The longest scoring runs in Premier League history

Mohamed Salah scored in the 95th minute for Liverpool as they kept their long scoring run alive with a dramatic 1-0 win at Burnley on Sunday.

The late goal from the penalty spot on Sunday saw the Red extend their club-record run to 38 top-flight games in which they’ve scored.

The Reds last failed to score in a Premier League game exactly one year ago, following a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield on September 14th 2024.

With the feat, just two teams have had a longer scoring run in Premier League history and Liverpool can level second-placed Tottenham Hotspur next weekend. If Arne Slot’s side score against Everton in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday, they will match Tottenham’s 39-game run achieved between March 2023 and March 2024.

However, the Reds still have some distance to catch the all-time divisional record. Arsenal hold the record, having scored in a staggering 55 consecutive top-flight games.

The longest team scoring runs in Premier League history

• Arsenal – 55 games (May 2001 – November 2002)
• Tottenham Hotspur – 39 games (March 2023 – Match 2024)
• Liverpool – 38 games* (August 2024 – present)
• Liverpool – 36 games (March 2019 to February 2020)
• Manchester United – 36 games (December 2007 to November 2008)

Man City 3-0 Man United: Haaland scores a double

Erling Haaland scored a brace as Manchester City beat close town rivals Manchester United 3-0 in the Manchester Derby staged on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

City had suffered back-to-back defeats before the international break but any fears of another loss were allayed with goals from Haaland and Phil Foden.

City paid tribute to former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton before the game with the home side not looking back from the first whistle.

Winger Jeremy Doku was pivotal for the first two goals, jinking through with quick feet to pull the ball back for local boy Foden to head home the opener on 18 minutes. City doubled their advantage on 53 minutes when star striker Haaland latched on to Doku’s pass before holding off Luke Shaw and dinking in a sumptuous finish.

Haaland, who pulled narrowly wide in the opening 10 seconds, should have scored a second immediately after netting when he took the ball round Altay Bayindir but somehow sent the ball against the post with an open goal gaping in front of him.

But the 25-year-old was not to be denied on 68 minutes when he ran clear from the halfway line and made no mistake with an unerring finish past the Turkish keeper.

The game saw goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma thrown straight in for his City debut after the deadline day move from Paris St-Germain and the Italy captain made a superb save at full stretch to deny Bryan Mbeumo’s volley.

CECAFA appoints new interim President

The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has appointed Alexandre Muyenge an interim President to oversee the body’s operations in the region.

The decision comes after incumbent Augustino Maduot lost his seat as president of the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) last month with Muyenge, who is the President of Burundi Football Federation, now taking charge.

Maduot, who was assigned to lead CECAFA on an interim basis, lost the SSFA election to Francis Amin with the decision now forcing CECAFA to elect a new boss until the 2026 elective general assembly.

The regional football body credits Maduot with building the CECAFA headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and reviving youth competitions and the Kagame Club Cup.

In the new changes, Eritrean National Football Federation (ENFF) president Paulos Weldehaimanot is the new vice president of the zonal union.

55-year-old Muyenge who has been leading the football governing body of Burundi since 2021 was handed over his helm as president to Muyenge on Wednesday, September 10, in a ceremony held in Nairobi.

He is expected to be in attendance in the final of the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zone qualifying tournament where Kenya is the host.

Bandari beaten in Yanga’s 90th anniversary

FKF Premier League side Bandari FC went 0-1 down to Young Africans (Yanga SC) in a friendly game that the hosts used to mark their annual Siku ya Wananchi celebrations.

The match staged at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Friday came just a day after Yanga’s rivals Simba SC overpowered Gor Mahia 2-0 at the same ground as they marked Simba Day.

The all important goal was scored inside two minutes when Burundian forward Ecua Celestine rose highest inside the box to head past Bandari goalkeeper Allain Ngeleka after a swift counter-attack from a corner.

Despite the setback, the Kenyan side grew into the game midway through the first half, with Beja Nyamawi and striker John Makwatta both testing Yanga’s shot-stopper Djigui Diarra. Bandari were however forced to be alert at the back due to constant attacks from Prince Mpumelelo Dube, Lassine Kouma, and Celestine.

Yanga almost doubled their lead just minutes into half time when Chadrack Boka unleashed a ferocious strike from the left flank, only for Sharif Majabe to intervene with a timely clearance.

The second half remained competitive with Harambee Stars attacker David Sakwa being a constant menace with his speed but his poor final product failed him twice.

The game also saw Yanga introduce Harambee Stars Midfielder Duke Abuya in the second half in their bid to give more players more minutes with the host holding on for a win.

Egyptian giants Zamalek SC have unveiled Kenya Under 20 captain Baron Ochieng as a free agent after terminating his contract with Sofapaka FC.

On unveiling the right back who has signed a four year deal, Zamalek said, “From the jungles of Nairobi to Mit Okba, welcome the new Kenyan arrival, Baron Ochieng.”

Ochieng will be registered as an underage player joins a team that currently sit second in the Nile Egyptian League table with 10 points from 3 victories, a draw and a loss.

Despite the conclusion of the summer transfer window at the end of August, FIFA regulations allow clubs to still register players with no clubs in Bosman deals.

Ochieng began his professional career at second-tier side Kibera Black Stars before moving to Sofapaka in 2023, where he quickly established himself as a key player. He first earned a call-up to the Kenya U18 side for the 2023 CECAFA Junior Championship before later featuring for the Rising Stars during the Four Nations Tournament in Malawi in March 2024.

In June, Ochieng made his debut for the senior squad, receiving his first-ever Harambee Stars call-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Burundi.

The player will be hoping he can play a part for his new team when they take on Masry in the sixth matchday of the Egyptian Premier this weekend.

Gor Mahia falls to Simba in Tanzania

Gor Mahia went 2-0 down to Tanzania giants Simba SC in a friendly match staged at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Dar Es Salaam on Wednesday 10th September 2024.

In a charged ground that had other activities before, Simba took a deserving lead in the sixth minutewhen Abdulrazack Mohamed Hamza towered above the Gor Mahia defence to plant his header past Gad Mathews in Gor Mahia goal to send the stadium into delirium.

Gor Mahia were however not deterred by the setback and continued to prod having had the duo of Sylvester Owino and Michael Kibwage, who had represented Harambee Stars 24 hours earlier, in the starting line up.

With things not working around for the visitors, coach Charles Akonnor was to bring in Austin Odhiambo in the first half; many having had surprises as to why the player wasn’t handed a start in the game. But that change did less in changing the scoreline in the first half.

Simba emerged for the second half in their blue jerseys having done the first in red and just as they did in the first half, doubled their lead just three minutes in.

Uganda forward Steven Mukwala dribbled through Gor Mahia players before planting the ball into the net for the second. Sensing that he needed to control his midfield, Akonnor sent in Alpha Onyango and Lewis Bandi in the second half, the duo also having part of the national team that defeated Seychelles in Nairobi.

Despite a late pressure from the Kenyan side, Simba walked home with all the points with their attention now turning to their Shield Cup game where they are set to face arch rivals Yanga in the coming week.

Gor now returns home to continue their preparations for the league where they are scheduled to open the season with a game against Bidco United.
