Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez ran over an 81-year-old man in his electric wheelchair on Tuesday morning and killed him instantly.
Martinez, Inter’s second goalkeeper, had a tragic accident on Tuesday morning in Fenegro, in the Como region, not far from Appiano Gentile, the Nerazzurri team’s headquarters.

Shortly before 10 o’clock, while driving his car, the Spaniard ran over an 81-year-old man who was in his electric wheelchair. The impact was fatal and despite the immediate intervention of the emergency services, the elderly man died instantly.
A helicopter from Como, an ambulance from the Red Cross of Saronno and the Cantù Carabinieri were on the scene to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the accident.
The 27 year old was unhurt but in a severe state of shock. The road was temporarily closed to allow the investigation and rescue operations.
According to Gazzetta, the initial hypothesis is that the elderly man may have suffered a sudden illness and wandered into the lane where Martinez was driving. The Nerazzurri goalkeeper immediately stopped and provided first aid to the man.
Following the tragic news and as a sign of mourning, Inter decided to cancel head coach Cristian Chivu’s press conference which was set later today.
