Ivory Coast hosted a successful African Cup of Nations and went on to win the title in what was the second time they were hosting the tournament.

While they finished the competition with a new man in charge following the sacking of Jean-Louis Gasset, stand-in tactician Emerse Fae defied all odds to take the host nation all the way. His heroics saw the nation’s president award him 150,000 Euros for his efforts.

While it was some good money, some tacticians were in the tournament who bagged more each month from their countries. So who were the highest-paid coaches in the competition?

  • 10. Jalel Kadri – €11,000 per month (Tunisia)

The 52-year-old had been in charge of the Tunisia national team since January 23rd, 2022 but couldn’t help his team past the group stage of the 2024 tournament.

  • 9. Rigobert Song – €29,000 per month (Cameroon)

The Cameroon legend has had an outing to forget with the national team. There have been reports of the player’s turmoil in camp with others claiming that he is just a puppet who works for the Federation boss Samuel Eto’o. They were eliminated in the last 16 stage of the tournament.

  • 8. Chris Hughton – €46,000 per month (Ghana)

Chris Hughton ranks as the 8th highest-paid coach at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament but has since been sacked after failing to guide the Black Stars past the group stage.

  • 7. Aliou Cissé – €46,000 per month (Senegal)

At the age of 47, Aliou Cisse failed to defend the AFCON trophy. His previous success includes leading Senegal to victory at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where they secured their first title by defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the final. There were reports that the Senegalese FA had not paid his dues for the past six months.

  • 6. Hugo Broos – €50,000 per month (South Africa)

Having assumed the position of Head Coach for the Bafana Bafana of South Africa on May 5, 2021, Hugo Broos led his team to a third-place finish in the just concluded showpiece.

  • 5. Walid Regragui – €60,000 per month (Morocco)

After guiding Morocco to the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, marking their first appearance since 1986, and achieving further success by reaching the quarter-finals with a penalty shootout victory over Spain in the round of 16, Walid was eliminated from the competition by South Africa in the last 16.

  • 4. Jose Peseiro – €70,000 per month (Nigeria)

Jose Peseiro was entrusted with guiding the Super Eagles to their fourth continental crown. On May 15, 2022, Peseiro assumed the role of the head coach for the Nigerian Men’s Football Team and while they started slowly, he managed to take them to the finals where they lost to Ivory Coast.

  • 3. Jean Louis Gasset – €108,000 per month

At 70 years old who was sacked after the group games was on an impressive monthly salary of €108,000.

  • 2. Rui Victoria – €200,000 per month (Egypt)

Taking the helm of the Egyptian national team on July 12, 2022, 53-year-old Rui Vitoria, who had previously managed Benfica, Al Nassr, and Spartak Moscow, inked a four-year contract. As per the terms of his agreement with Egypt, Vitoria commands an impressive monthly salary of €200,000 but has since been sacked.

  • Djamel Belmadi – €208,000 per month (Algeria)

Assuming the managerial role of the Algerian national team on August 2, 2018, 46-year-old Belmadi quickly made his mark. Steering Algeria to victory, he secured his first international trophy for the country during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. But just like the others who didn’t perform, he has since left the national team.
