Wales will not be participating in Euro 2024 after they were knocked by Poland 5-4 in post-match penalties after a scoreless draw in normal time in the playoff finals.

Wales thought that they had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time through Ben Davies, only for the offside flag to be raised, meaning that they headed into the break goalless. Both sides had chances in the second half, and it was unsurprising to see the two lowest-scoring sides qualify to head to extra time.

Poland dominated the extra 30 minutes, with Wales sitting deeper and deeper as they just about held on, still looking to hit Poland on the counter-attack but no one was to get the better of the other with the game forced to go to penalties.

A series of perfect penalties followed, and after Dan James missed Wales’ fifth from the spot, it was Poland who booked the last spot at Euro 2024.

In other qualifiers, Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk sent Ukraine to Euro 2024 after helping his country to a 2-1 win over Iceland.

In-form Genoa striker Albert Gudmundsson picked the ball up midway inside the Ukraine half and rifled home an excellent effort from 25 yards out to hand the minnows an unlikely lead. The second half saw Ukraine continue to dominate and they finally got their reward when Viktor Tsygankov found the bottom corner to restore parity.

After a spirited defensive display from Iceland, they were finally breached when Sudakov’s pass found Mudryk, who swept into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area to send his side into the finals of Euro 2024.

The first game of the day saw Georgia book their Euro slot after eliminating Greece 4-2 in post-match penalties after a goalless draw in regular time.
