Ollie Watkins came off the bench to score in the 91st minute to send England to the final of the Euro 2024 at the expense of the Netherlands who they beat 2-1 in the competition’s semis on Wednesday night.

England found themselves behind after just seven minutes as Xavi Simons robbed Declan Rice before firing the ball past Jordan Pickford from 25 yards out. But the Three Lions rallied and were on the receiving end of one of the more controversial decisions at EURO 2024 as a VAR review adjudged Denzel Dumfries to have fouled Harry Kane when the England striker tried to volley towards goal.

Kane stepped up and found the bottom corner to level proceedings, and give England a massive helping hand in their chase of a spot in the final. Phil Foden could have put them into it, with the Manchester City man seeing one effort cleared off the line and another come back off the woodwork in a first half that also saw Dumfries hit the bar for the Netherlands.

Bukayo Saka thought he had put England ahead late in the second half but his effort was chopped off for offside. But with the game headed for extra time, Ollie Watkins, sent on in place of Harry Kane, picked the ball up with his back to goal before turning and firing low past Bart Verbruggen, and booking England’s place in the final on Sunday.
