Brazil and Uruguay played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday morning as South American World Cup Qualifying games continued.

Dorival Júnior’s side has seen their qualifying campaign marred by inconsistency and despite holding their visitors to a scoreless draw in the first half, they were punished after the break when Real Madrid man Federico Valverde scored a stunner to put the visitors ahead.

They however responded seven minutes later when Gerson lashed home a superb volley to reclaim parity and earn a point for the hosts. The shared points see Brazil miss out on an opportunity to leapfrog Uruguay in the standings, but they remain fifth.

In another game in the morning, Argentina got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Peru. Pedro Gallese and the Peruvian rearguard were stubborn throughout the night, and the frustration inside La Bombonera was palpable.

They were finally undone before the hour mark however, when Lautaro Martínez pulled off an audacious finish to fire home a Lionel Messi cross and give the hosts the lead and the victory saw their lead at the top of the qualifying table to five points for now.
