East African football fans are in for a thrilling contest as Uganda and Tanzania find themselves in the same group for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U17 tournament.
The two CECAFA heavyweights will battle not only for regional bragging rights but also for a spot in the FIFA U17 World Cup. The tournament, set to run from March 30 to April 19, 2025, in Morocco, will feature 16 of Africa’s finest youth teams.

Uganda and Tanzania are drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco and Zambia, making it one of the most competitive groups in the tournament.
In Group B, South Africa will take on African powerhouse Egypt, Burkina Faso, and the winner of the UNIFFAC qualifiers.
Meanwhile, defending champions Senegal lead Group C, where they will face The Gambia, Tunisia, and CECAFA’s third-place finishers Somalia. Group D features Mali, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, and the UNIFFAC runners-up.
This edition of the tournament carries even greater significance, with a record 10 African teams set to qualify for the expanded 48-team FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar from November 5-27, 2025.
