With the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers returning this week for African teams, fans across the African continent will be depending on their coaches to deliver.

The delivery of results has seen some countries deploy coaches on good salaries. They hope that the expertise offered will match their ambitions as nations who want to feature regularly in the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.

By appointing South Africa legend Benny McCarthy, the Football Kenya Federation has been under the microscope on the financial burden the former Manchester United will hand them having come with his team to replace Engin Firat.

Figures ranging from sh 2.2M to sh 8M have been suggested as the official salary for McCarthy but who are the highest-earning national team coaches in the continent?

  1. Vladimir Petkovic (Algeria)

Petkovic is reportedly earning €135,000 (sh 18.6M) a month making him the continent’s top earner. He has led the country to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with his previous stint coming with the Switzerland national team coach from 2014-2021, leading them to Euro 2016 and 2020, reaching the quarterfinal in the latter, and Round of 16 of the 2018 World Cup.

2. Aliou Cisse (Libya)

Just as McCarthy, Cisse will be leading Libya for the first time this month having been in the cold for some time following his departure from the Senegalese national team. Footballboom and sources in Libya indicate that the former captain of the Lions will be earning a monthly salary reaching €76,000 (sh 10.5M).

3. Hugo Broos (South Africa)

An AFCON 2017 winner with Cameroon, the Belgian coach walks home with a monthly salary of €75,000 (Ksh10.3 million).
