Italy will be without striker Mateo Retegui for both legs of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final against Germany.
The Atalanta and the current Serie A top scorer has been ruled out of the clash because of a thigh injury according to a statement from Italy’s Football Association (FIGC) said on Wednesday.

“Striker Mateo Retegui, who underwent instrumental tests this morning for a muscle strain in his right thigh was assessed as unavailable for both matches against Germany and returned to his club for further evaluation,” a FIGC statement said.
The Argentina-born has been a breath of fresh air for his club this season having bagged 22 league goals where he has given his side a fighting chance in the title race. On the international stage, he has bagged six goals for Italy in 18 appearances since making his debut in 2023.
Retegui’s rival in the Serie A Golden Boot race, Moise Kean, is now expected to lead Italy’s attack with the Fiorentina man having 15 league goals this season.
Italy host Germany at the San Siro in Thursday’s first leg and the return is in Dortmund on Sunday.
