Argentina thumped Brazil 4-1 in a 2026 World Cup Qualifying game staged on Wednesday morning despite having sealed their qualification earlier.

Argentina were on top from the very jump, perhaps buoyed by their qualification earlier in the day. They grabbed the lead inside five minutes thanks to red-hot Julián Alvarez, and Enzo Fernández one-upped his finish just eight minutes later to double the lead.

While the hosts looked poised to run away with it, a defensive lapse allowed Matheus Cunha to steal in and fire his shot in past Emi Martínez to cut the lead in half. Any hope of a Brazil fightback was quelled late in the first half when Alexis Mac Allister fired home a superb finish from close range.

After the break, the hole got even deeper when Giuliano Simeone came off the bench for Argentina to add another goal to the tally.

While Argentina confirmed their place in the next World Cup, the defeat leaves Brazil fourth in the table with 21 points. The top six teams will qualify for the World Cup.
