Zambia are out of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 following their 3-1 loss to Morocco in a game played at Kenya’s Nyayo Stadium on Thursday evening.
Zambia came knowing well that anything rather than a win would have been a dent in their ambitions to stay in the tournament having lost their first two games against DR Congo and Angola.

Morocco, having lost their last game against Kenya, started strongly and wasted a chunk of opportunities before they were awarded at the stroke of half time when Youssef Mehri’s delivery from a corner found Mohame Hrimat, who rifled a right-footed shot into the top corner.
Zambia came in the second half a different team and thought they had restored parity in the 65th minute when Happy Nsiku bundled the ball over the line, but VAR review, they were judged to have fouled an opponent before scoring.

Before Zambia could restructure, Morocco hit them again a minute later through this time through the break. Mehri again provided the assist, this time floating in a cross that Oussama Lamlaoui headed past the Zambian keeper.
Zambia pulled a goal back through Andrew Phiri twenty minutes from time but as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Morocco exploited the space left behind with substitute Sabir Bougrine, introduced in the 85th minute, ensuring the points were safe for Morocco with a stoppage time goal.
The win moves Morocco into contention for a place in the knockout stages as they wait for the clash between Angola and DR Congo being played later on.
