Mathare United head coach John Kamau has attributed the team’s struggles in the league to a lack of quality players, citing the squad’s inexperience as a major challenge.
Speaking after their 2-0 defeat to Murang’a Seal at Dandora Stadium on Tuesday, Kamau feels most of his players were from lower tiers and have it hard to adapt to the demands of the top flight.

“One of the key issues is the quality of our players. If you analyze our squad, we’re now in week 13, and most of them have come from very lower leagues. This transition to the Kenya Premier League is proving challenging for them due to the higher level of competition,” Kamau said. “What matters most is not dwelling on what has gone wrong but focusing on how we can turn things around. We need players who are ready to fight and rise to the occasion.”
United came into the game desperate for a win after a three-match winless streak, which included two losses and a draw. While both teams enjoyed a balanced share of possession in the opening stages, Murang’a Seal displayed greater intensity, which ultimately paid off.
In the 17th minute, Stephen Okola had an opportunity to put Mathare United ahead, but his header missed the target. Moments later, Murang’a Seal capitalized on their momentum when Titus Kapchanga broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, expertly heading home a cross that left goalkeeper Wanyika rooted to the spot.

Mathare United captain Kevin Kimani came close to levelling the score in the 38th minute with a shot from the edge of the box, but his effort went wide.
The second half saw Mathare United introduce Paul Kinyanjui, who almost made an immediate impact in the 50th minute by rattling the crossbar. However, Murang’a Seal extended their lead in the 62nd minute when Joe Waithira capitalized on a defensive lapse to secure the win.
The defeat leaves Mathare United searching for answers as they prepare for their next fixture. They face Bandari on December 11 at the Ukunda Showground at 1:00 PM, followed by a home match against Shabana on December 21 at Dandora Stadium.
