The Netherlands have reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after hitting USA 3-1 in the round of 16 clash staged on Saturday evening.

Goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, and Denzel Dumfries were enough for Louis van Gaal’s side to pick up an impressive victory in the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.

The Netherlands took control in the first half, with attacker Memphis Depay and defender Daley Blind scoring their first goals in the tournament. The second half saw Haji Wright giving the American team some hope by getting back to 2-1. However, it was immediately followed by the Netherlands’ Denzel Dumfries scoring the team’s third goal.

Leading up to the game, the Netherlands had two wins against Qatar and Senegal and a draw with Ecuador while the USA had one win against Iran and shared two draws with the United Kingdom and Wales.

Oranje will now get five days off from competition, before moving on to face either Argentina or Australia next Friday night; the two sides are set to meet each other later on Saturday. That quarterfinals match will take place in the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
