Kenyan referee Peter Waweru has been appointed for VAR duties for the upcoming African Championship tournament (CHAN).

The appointment comes just a week after world football governing body FIFA lifted the suspension imposed on Kenya due to government interference with Waweru, in an interview with the FKF media team, terming the appointment a blessing.

.“It is a favor from above. This is good news for me; Africa is big and wide so it’s an honor to be chosen. It’s a chance to grow my career and it’s also good news for the country as well. Hopefully, this will help inspire young people to become referees.

“I thank the government for helping to lift the FIFA suspension. This is a direct result of that action. It means Kenyan officials can now be selected for CAF and FIFA duty again.”

The 2023 CHAN edition will be hosted in Algeria starting from January 13 to February 4.
