Ollie Watkins grabbed a brace as Aston Villa beat Newcastle United 3-0 in a Premier League game staged on Saturday afternoon.

With England boss Gareth Southgate watching on, Watkins netted his 13th and 14th top-flight goals of the season after setting up Jacob Ramsey’s first-half opener, as the Lions won five Premier League games in a row for the first time since 1998.

Watkins intent was shown from the onset as his effort was to hit the post just a minute into the game. They were however rewarded in the 11th minute when a John McGinn cross from the right was headed down by Watkins into the penalty area, and Jacob Ramsey arrived on the scene to drill home a low effort into Nick Pope’s goal.

While a goal separated the two sides at half time, Villa were to double their lead in the 6th minute with Watkins slotting home from close range after he had been denied earlier by VAR. The Englishman was to put the game beyond the visitors reach six minutes from time as he calmly slotted from Emiliano Buendia’s cutback albeit with a slight help from Kieran Trippier.

For Newcastle, defeat ended their own five-game triumphant run in the top flight, and Eddie Howe will have his own worries in his bid to qualify for the Champions League.
