Newcastle United boosted their Champions League hopes with a convincing 6-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League game staged on Sunday.

Tottenham could not have got off to a worse start though as Joelinton’s shot was parried into the path of Jacob Murphy, who tapped in after just two minutes. And things got even worse for the north London side just moments later as Joelinton rounded Hugo Lloris for a second goal.

An astonishing opening 10 minutes got even crazier as Murphy struck from the edge of the area for his second of the game and the Toon’s third. Alexander Isak raced onto a through ball and fired in. And then a fifth came just seconds later as Isak’s shot squirmed under Lloris.

Into the second half and Spurs made a change at the break as Fraser Forster replaced Hugo Loris after his calamitous opening 45 minutes. Kane was doing his level best to make it a turnaround for the ages as he scored with a neat finish to pull one back. Newcastle had their five-goal lead restored in 67 minutes as Callum Wilson came on and tapped in.

In another game on Sunday, West Ham beat AFC Bournemouth 4-0 to run further from the relegation zone.

The Hammers took the lead inside five minutes as Michail Antonio continued his fine form with another goal. They got a second after 12 minutes through Lucas Paqueta. Captain Declan Rice then added some gloss on a brilliant first half performance by netting his side’s third just before the break. Pablo Fornals got in on the act as he netted a stunning fourth for David Moyes’s side to put the gloss on the result in the second half.
