Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu is on the verge of joining French Ligue One side Stade de Reims.

The player was set to join his team for their preseason training in France last week but the deal couldn’t materialize due to some fine details on the bonuses; the Kenyan returning to Gent where he was part of their preseason game against Croatia side Lokomotiva Zagreb on Saturday.

Pepeta has since learned that the finer details of the contract have finally been agreed upon with Gent with the players’ wages the only thing left for the deal to sail through; the club said to be going for seven players in the current transfer window.

The number is to replace the departed players some who were at the club on loan deals. Folarin Balogun has returned to Arsenal and is said to be attracting interest from Chelsea, Myziane Maolida has returned to Hertha with Noah Jean Holm going back to Rosenborg. Hugo Ekitike has moved to PSG with Fraser Hornby moving to Darmstadt 98 of Germany.

Already they have roped in the services of Teddy Teuma (29) from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, striker Amine Salama from Angers and Oumar Diakite from RB Salzburg.

Gent are willing to let some of their star players leave as they try to balance their financial books with Gift Orban, Davy Roef, and Alessio Montes being the players set to leave the side.

This is not the first time that Reims are after Okumu with the French side having expressed interest in the player while he was still in the books of Swedish side IF Elfsborg. His agent, the Elite Project Group Limited, are the same people who took Balogun to Reims last season. The group also represents Jadon Sancho of Man United and Bukayo Saka of Arsenal.

Reims finished 11th last season in the French Ligue 1 and are coached by 30-year-old Will Still.
