Donny van de Beek scored the lone goal as Manchester United beat Lyon 1-0 in a preseason friendly game staged at Edinburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Erik ten Hag tasked Raphael Varane with the captain’s armband from the start after stripping Harry Maguire of the captaincy earlier in the week with both halves having different players; Brazilian Fred, who has been linked with a move away from the club handed the armband in the second half.

Mason Mount was once again given a staring berth and it was United who had the better chances in the first half with Amad Diallo being a constant thorn in the opposition’s flesh even though the premier league side failed to utilize their chances.

The second also saw Johnny Evans handed some playing minutes after signing a short-term deal with United. The defender who is a graduate of the United academy was a free agent after being released by Leicester City following their relegation to the Championship and ha strongly been linked with a move to Everton.

It took just four minutes of the second half for United to take the lead when a brilliant cross from 18-year-old Daniel Gore was met with an expertly-struck volley by Van de Beek.

The victory was United’s second in the preseason after seeing Leeds United 2-0 in their first preseason game last week.
