The rift that led to Ben White’s self-imposed exile from the England squad started with a comment made by Gareth Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland at the 2022 World Cup.

In a report by Telegraph Sport, it is said that the Arsenal defender asked to come home from the tournament after a conversation between him and Holland in front of other squad members.

It is understood that the England no.2 asked White a question relating to Arsenal’s performance in the previous season, after putting a similar one to Kyle Walker regarding Manchester City.

When White said he did not know the answer, it is claimed Holland responded by saying it was because he was not sufficiently interested in football, citing a comment made by the player in an interview a year prior.

The Telegraph also state that there was another private conversation between the pair later on the same day, and prior to White’s request to leave the camp, there was no known issue remaining.

Southgate played down reports of a fall-out between his assistant and now-former player last week, but it now appears there is an issue of respect on White’s part and it is the reason he has turned down the chance to represent his country for now.

The 26-year-old has been capped four times but despite his brilliant form for Arsenal this season, it is almost certain he will not be adding to that tally at this summer’s European Championships.
