Zak Vyner Onyego marked a significant milestone by making his 200th appearance for Bristol City in their 2-0 victory over Norwich City in the English Football League Championship.
The memorable performance not only showcased Vyner’s defensive strength but also saw Bristol City secure all three points at Carrow Road, their first consecutive away victory since April 2022.

The visitors took the lead early in the game through Anis Mehmeti’s precise finish in the first half. Mehmeti capitalized on a pass from Haydon Roberts, who had received the ball from Max Bird’s play switch. Mehmeti turned swiftly, cutting inside and drilling a low shot into the bottom corner, giving Bristol City the lead in the 16th minute.
Nahki Wells later sealed the win in style with a powerful strike in the 64th minute, notching his 500th career league appearance with an impressive goal. This well-timed finish came after Mehmeti intercepted a loose pass, sparking a counter that saw Jason Knight break through midfield and set up Wells for a clinical finish past Norwich’s George Long.
Bristol City’s defence remained solid throughout, recording their fourth clean sheet of the season. Vyner, a key figure in the defensive setup, contributed to keeping Norwich’s attack at bay alongside goalkeeper Max O’Leary, who was relatively untested in the match.
Norwich’s closest chance came early when Callum Doyle’s cross found Emiliano Marcondes, who headed the ball onto the post. Though Norwich pressed, City’s resolute defence denied them any real openings, with O’Leary calmly gathering Marcondes’ free-kick and later handling a long-range strike from Ante Cranc.
As the game progressed, Bristol City showed patience and resilience, absorbing pressure and countering effectively. The Canaries’ Borja Sainz led several attacking moves, but City’s backline, anchored by Vyner, thwarted every attempt. Bristol City wrapped up the match with an assured performance, securing back-to-back wins and heading into the international break in high spirits
For Vyner, this milestone was especially meaningful, highlighting his importance at the club and his potential for the Harambee Stars. Earlier in June, Vyner was called up by Kenya’s head coach, Engin Firat, but his debut was delayed due to passport issues, requiring his return to the UK before he could complete the process.
Despite the setback, Vyner’s performances for Bristol City make him an exciting prospect for Harambee Stars with a number of Kenyan fans eagerly awaiting his debut.
