The Hammers, from nowhere, were to take the lead in the sixth-minute when Lucas Paqueta gave launched a spectacular swerving, dipping shot over Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez but Chelsea were leveled nine minutes later.

The goal with Marc Cucurella flicking on Pedro Neto’s corner for Joao Pedro to nod in his first Premier League goal for his new side. Niclas Fullkrug thought he had restored the Hammers lead but his effort was copped out by VAR for being offside.

Chelsea took the lead after Paqueta was bullied off the ball by Chalobah, Pedro chipped the ball across and Neto, completely unmarked, converted with a volley at the far post. Their third came courtesy of a dazzling first assist from Estevao, who raced unchallenged into the area and squared for Fernandez to tuck into an empty net.

The routing didn’t end there as they were to add a fourth nine minutes into the second half after the West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen flapped at another corner and Caicedo drilled the ball home.

Hermansen was culpable again as the fifth flew past him, from another corner, via the head of Chalobah, and there were even fans running onto the pitch towards the end of a humiliating night for West Ham.
