Somali champions Mogadishu City Club (MCC) through their coach Ali Abubakar has apologised to Kenyans after a section of their fans were captured disrespecting the Kenyan flag.

Three of the club fans were snapped shoving the Kenyan flag down at the Nyayo Stadium when the club met Kenya Police FC in a CAF Champions League game over the weekend.

The move has sparked outrage among Kenyans who called on the government to take action on the fans with Abubakar flanked by the Somali ambassador to Kenya issuing a statement of apology on behalf of the fans.

“As the head coach of the club and a proud of Somali Kenya, I want to condemn the unfortunate incident during our game against Police FC where a few individuals disrespected the Kenyan flag. The action doesn’t represent our club in any way,” Ali said. “Im not proud of the action of those individuals and they acted on their own. On behalf of our club we apologize to the government and the people of Kenya. Football is about unity respect and friendship.”

Earlier on, the club had released a statement on the incident noting, “On behalf of Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the Government and People of Kenya. Such behaviour has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents.”

Mogadishu City Club, which won the Somali First Division title last season, is no stranger to playing its continental matches outside Somalia due to infrastructure and security challenges at home.

The club now faces a daunting task on the pitch, as Kenya Police FC head into the return leg with a 3-1 lead where goals from Erick Zakayo, Edward Omondi and David Simiyu placed Police in the driving seat.
