Kenyan giants Gor Mahia are the 2022/23 FKF Premier League Champions following their 4-1 win over Nairobi City Stars on the final day of the season.

The title however didn’t come without a fight as City Stars had frustrated the Johnny McKinstry side for the better part of the first half. News had infiltrated Kasarani that Tusker FC, who were just a point below them heading into the final day, had taken a 2-0 lead in Mumias against Vihiga Bullets.

While Gor attacked for better part of the game, City Stars were reluctant and sat back to thwart the numerous attacks brought by their opponents. With the game ending scoreless in the first half, City Stars surprisingly took the lead three minutes after resumption through the in-form Samuel Kapen but Benson Omal restored parity two minutes later.

After the Omala goal, it was all Gor Mahia, as Peter Lwasaa gave Gor the lead in the 62nd minute before Austin Odhiambo ensured the points were safe with a sumptuous free-kick ten minutes from time. The goal had killed City Stars’ morale with substitute Alpha Onyango wrapping up the goal-scoring proceedings in stoppage time.

In other games of the day, Tusker emerged 4-0 winners over Bullets in a match staged at the Mumias Complex but it did less in changing the fortunes of the title race. Deogracious Ojok and Shami Kibwana had given them a 2-0 lead at halftime before a Stewart Omondi double late on ensured that they finished second in the league.

Bandari FC emerged 2-1 winners over Posta Rangers with AFC Leopards beating a 10-man Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 in a game staged at Nyayo Stadium.
