Kenya’s President William Ruto has presided over the groundbreaking of the Talanta Sports City which is set to be one of the hosting grounds for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Located in Nairobi’s Jamhuri Grounds, the 60000 capacity facility is purely a football grounds, with no running track as has been the norm in most stadiums in the country, however, there will be a separate uncovered pitch outside the main ground with a running track.

The construction of the stadium will be handled by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and will be supervised by the Kenya Defense Forces; work on the ground is set to commence this month to December 2025.

Upon completion, the Talanta Sports City will serve as a venue for both football and rugby matches, with additional provisions for hosting concerts. Furthermore, Ruto urged the Ministries to prioritize cost-saving measures throughout the project.

About other facilities, the Head of State announced that the refurbishment of the Kasarani Stadium will be completed by the end of this year, with works on the Nyayo Stadium to commence shortly thereafter.

Kenya alongside Uganda and Tanzania will host the 2027 AFCON tournament. Being among the hosts, Harambee Stars automatically qualified for the event.
