Gor Mahia head coach Johnny McKinstry is set to ditch the FKF Premier League leaders for the Gambia national team at the end of the season.

The Standard of Gambia reports that McKinstry is the front-runner for the vacant position and is set to fly out for talks with the Gambian FA next week to hold talks where he is expected to be handed a contract with former Gambia international Abdou Jammeh as his assistant.

McKinstry’s two-year deal with Gor Mahia is set to end in September 2024 but the reports indicate that the club and the North Irishman will sit down and allow him to leave the club after the end of the current campaign where he is expected to lead them to the league title.

McKinstry has a vast coaching experience in the African continents having coached in several countries including Rwanda, Ghana, Uganda and Sierra Leone. He has previously coached in his native Northern Ireland, England, USA, Lithuania and Bangladesh.

His early career was focused on elite youth development through roles with Newcastle United, New York Red Bulls, the Right to Dream Academy and the Craig Bellamy Foundation.

Gambia, placed in Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers alongside Kenya, Ivory Coast, Burundi, Gabon, and Seychelles, has been without a coach since the departure of Tom Saintfiet after the last Africa Cup of Nations.
