Gor Mahia were finally crowned Champions over the weekend following their 3-0 win over Muhoroni Youth at the Sportpesa Arena.

While Gor was the talk of the weekend, it was a sad week for Western Kenya football as Nzoia’s six-year association with the Kenyan top flight ended following their scoreless draw against Nairobi City Stars. We take a look at some of the major talking points of the round.

Sofapaka boost their survival chances

Sofapaka boosted their survival chances despite losing a two-goal lead to draw Bandari in Ukunda. The draw saw them climb to 14th on the table with 32 points, four points above 14th-placed Muhoroni Youth who were beaten by Gor Mahia on Sunday. The future down the table looks bleak too for Shabana FC who threw a lead to go 2-1 down to Kariobangi Sharks.

FC Talanta, who is the other team who are living precautiously, will have a chance to ease their relegation woes when they meet form-less KCB on Monday in one of the two league games scheduled today.

Nzoia’s journey in the league ends

Nzoia Sugar FC will be participating in the National Super League after failing to find the net against visiting Nairobi City Stars.

The draw means Nzoia have collected just 19 points this season, their lowest point tally since their promotion in 2017, 10 points below Shabana FC with less than three games to go. It remains to be seen who will join them in the nation’s second tier with Shabana and Muhoroni Youth being the favourites to join them.

Makwatta isn’t giving up on the golden boot

With another two goals to his name this weekend, Makwatta has brought his goal tally to 13 goals this season and is now just four goals off the top scorer Benson Omala. For a player who wasn’t in the league in the first leg, Makwatta’a outing has been surreal and came and has been a proper booster for Kariobangi Sharks who struggled to find goals in the first half of the season. With three games still to go, no one can write him off the Golden Boot race if he continues to bang goals in the next fixtures.

Gor Mahia, Champions Again

Gor Mahia’s dominance in the FKF Premier League continues after bagging their 21st league title. Despite missing an earlier penalty, his second in a span of a week, Benson Omala still grabbed the headlines by scoring a brace in a match that Muhoroni had threatened to give a walkover.

The dominance locally has prompted fans to call for proper summer preparation as the team gears to return to continental assignment where they will enter the CAF Champions League at the preliminary stage.
