Mathare United midfielder Paul Kinyanjui is eyeing more success with his team after bagging his first goal of the season over the weekend.
The versatile player, who can also operate as a winger opened his account for the Slum Boys with a cracker in the 18th minute in the 1-1 draw against Sofapaka and speaking after the match, he said;

“I feel great, I feel amazing. It’s an opportunity the coach has given me. I’ve started all three league matches so far, and I want to prove myself and earn more playing time. When I get that time, I have to assist or score to market myself. This is my first goal in the top flight, and it feels incredible.”
“I’ve been waiting and hungry for this game. In friendlies, I’ve been in similar situations but missed chances. During the week, I worked on it, and when the opportunity came today (Sunday), it was my chance to see if my efforts in training would pay off and it did.”
The midfielder, who rose from the Regional League to the National Super League (NSL) and now the FKF Premier League, reflected on the challenges he’s overcome.
“The journey was challenging in the NSL, having come from a regional side, but my hunger to learn made it easier. I made my debut against Mara Sugar in the NSL, coming on as a sub, and since then, I’ve either been a starter or a second-half substitute,” Kinyanjui revealed.
As Mathare United looks to stabilize in the FKF Premier League, Kinyanjui is focused on delivering more goals and assists. “The fans should expect more goals, assists, and consistency from me,” he confidently added.
The young midfielder also touched on the personal sacrifices he’s made to get to this point, stating; “I’ve worked so hard to be in the premier league it’s been my dream all along, my parents didn’t want me to play football, but now it’s paying some bills for us and they are happy.”
Kinyanjui joined Mathare United from the regional side Gatongoria FC last season and played an important role in their return to the top flight with a memorable moment being his 89th-minute goal against Nairobi United who were also chasing for promotion to the top flight sealing a 3-2 victory. That goal was pivotal in Mathare’s promotion push.
