Mathare United secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over FC Talanta in a gripping FKF Premier League match, marking their second win of the season under head coach John Kamau.
Goals from Cetric Asango and captain Elli Asieche sealed the three points at Dandora Stadium, as FC Talanta struggled to find the back of the net despite a determined second-half effort.
The opening stages were a tense midfield battle, with both sides testing each other’s resolve but unable to break the deadlock. Mathare United’s Kelvin Kimani had a chance in the 15th minute, sending a powerful free kick towards the goal, only for Talanta’s goalkeeper Mustapha Oduor to make a crucial save. Mathare kept up the pressure with a series of corners in the 18th minute, but Talanta’s defense held firm.
Mathare’s first real opportunity to score came in the 32nd minute when debutant Kiprotich connected with a Kimani cross but sent the ball inches wide with his knee. Another chance came just before halftime, as Dan Odhiambo made a darting run down the left flank, setting up Chris Koloti in the box. Koloti, however, couldn’t get his shot on target, leaving the game goalless at the break.
Mathare United made their pressure count early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Cetric Asango broke the deadlock, rising above the defense to meet a well-placed corner from Kimani, heading the ball past Oduor to make it 1-0.
The momentum stayed with Mathare, and they doubled their lead in the 62nd minute. Captain Elli Asieche struck decisively, giving Mathare a two-goal cushion that ultimately secured the win. Talanta, coached by Jackline Juma, tried to mount a comeback, but the Mathare defense stood strong.
The result leaves Mathare United celebrating their second win in the league after a disastrous start into the new season, while Talanta will need to regroup after their second defeat of the season.
