Gor Mahia centre-back Alphonse Omija is set to be out for a month after sustaining a knee injury during a training session with Harambee Stars at Juba National Stadium in South Sudan.

The defender who Gor Mahia from Dhofar Sports Club in Oman at the start of the season has quickly established himself as a key figure for both club and country and his absence in the first leg of the CHAN qualifiers against South Sudan saw Harambee Stars lose 2-0.

Following medical assessment, Omija has been diagnosed with extensive bone marrow edema in the medial femoral condyle, along with a high T2 signal in the anterior cruciate ligament. This suggests a sprain or a partial tear, meaning his return could take anywhere from two to four weeks.

Omija shared insight into his recovery plan, emphasizing caution over rushing back into action.

“I’ll be sidelined for a number of weeks, that’s like two weeks minimum and four weeks maximum. I’ve been advised not to rush it, as it might result in a serious injury. So, I’ll just take some rest and see how it goes,” he said.

Since his arrival, Omija has formed a reliable partnership with fellow defender Sylvester Owino. His robust defending and ability to read the game have been instrumental in Gor Mahia’s backline which saw him being named the man of the match in the club’s 0-0 draw against KCB.
