Mathare United has announced the suspension of four of their players for getting involved in an unsanctioned game.

Kevin Kimani, Elli Asieche, Brian Ouru, and Eric Mulu have been suspended for two weeks without pay following a breach of club regulations.

The decision was revealed in an official club statement, which cited that the players had participated in an unsanctioned match just days before Mathare’s crucial league clash with Police FC, an action taken without the club’s knowledge or approval.

“The players’ participation in the external match was deemed a direct violation of several clauses in their contracts,” the club said in a statement. “One of the key clauses emphasizes that players are required to “maintain a high standard of physical fitness at all times and not to indulge in any sport, activity, or practice that might endanger their fitness. By participating in an unsanctioned tournament, the four players risked compromising their readiness for official fixtures and violated this standard.”

The club has stated that this disciplinary measure is meant to uphold professional standards and remind all players of their contractual obligations. However, Mathare United has made it clear that they will not be releasing further details on the matter, adding, “There will be no further communication from the club or any of its members regarding this decision.”

This decision comes at a time when the Kenyan football scene is having a buzz on whether players should participate in tournaments when the league is in motion.
