Kakamega Homeboyz assistant coach Paul Okatwa is the latest coach to raise concerns about the suitability of Dandora Stadium to host games.
The turf has come under close scrutiny by coaches with AFC Leopards’ Thomas Trucha being among those concerned about the ground with reports indicating that the ground lacks the rubber cushioning typically found in modern fields, and this has reportedly contributed to an increase in player injuries.

“To be honest, the quality of this turf, I don’t think it’s supposed to be hosting top-tier matches that involve high intensity. It doesn’t have the standard rubber. We are risking the careers of our players here because of injuries.” Okatwa said after their game against Sofapaka.
“It’s a good field, but the quality for top tier is a no… we are risking our players’ careers here and this isn’t about my team but all the players who get involved in this pitch are at a risk of getting career-ending injuries.”
His sentiments were echoed by Marafiki FC head coach Suleiman Ngotho, who also raised concerns about the playing surface.
“The pitch looks nice when you’re outside, but for football, it’s a no; it’s a recipe for injuries,” Ngotho noted. For Suleiman, the issue goes beyond his squad, as he expressed worry for “other sides in the top flight” as well.
Patrick Odhiambo, head coach of KCB also raised his concerns after his team’s recent fixture at Dandora Stadium.
“The pitch is too slippery; you have seen it. Players can’t express themselves; they are too cautious,” Odhiambo added.
The other who has complained is Gor Mahia’s Sylvester Owino, who sustained a hamstring injury during their 0-0 draw with KCB on October 23rd at the stadium. In a separate interview with Mozzart Sports, Owino raised his concerns about the venue.
“The Dandora Stadium turf doesn’t have rubber, so it makes it even harder because beneath that turf is concrete. The rubber helps as it cushions the hardness and prevents it from being slippery,” he said. “If you are involved in a lot of actions, you will feel discomfort in your knee or ankle at the end of the match.”
