Not many players make a lasting impression in their first FKF Premier League match, where nerves and the pressure of top-flight football often lead to faltering debuts.

But Starlon Odhiambo, Mathare United’s promising young defender, defied the odds with a remarkable performance that helped his team win and cemented his place as a talent to watch.

Odhiambo, who joined the Slum Boys from National Super League side Kibera Black Stars, was thrust into the spotlight on Sunday as he debuted against league leaders KCB at Dandora Stadium.

In a high-stakes game, the defender held his ground with maturity beyond his years and contributed to Mathare’s 1-0 victory by setting up the winning goal in the 82nd minute with his cross finding Meshark Ochieno who tapped in the winner and the player was ecstatic.

“It feels nice,” he said to the club media after the game. “Though it was difficult to adapt in the first minutes, it gradually came in. I’m thankful to the coach; I’ve been the one who has taken long to adapt to the club’s system of play but I’m glad I’ve found my footing.”

Odhiambo’s roots in football run deep—he’s the son of Kenyan football legend Noah Abich, whose shoes he now steps into with the pressure of carrying forward a family legacy. And for the former Tusker Youth defender, family support played a big role on his debut day.

“I passed by my parent’s place and informed them of my debut today in the top flight, and they congratulated me and told me to give my best to secure my place in the lineup again. I’m glad I gave it my best; at least when going back, I’ll tell them things went well,” he added.

Odhiambo’s performance was a clear message that Mathare United has gained not only a talented defender but also a player with the potential to make an impact in Kenya’s top-tier league.

With his impressive debut behind him, he is eager to continue proving himself and helping his team reach new heights this season.
