Initially, the elections were scheduled for 2020 but were postponed indefinitely, making this year’s polls a highly anticipated event.
The outgoing board includes several members who are now vying for senior positions. Former Deputy President Bonfas Salano from the USIU, and Alfred Rono, who served as Treasurer and represents the University of Eldoret, are both in contention for the presidency.
Other notable contestants include Dr. Timothy Ramara of Meru University and Maurice Ochieng’ of the Technical University of Kenya. In the race for Deputy President, Joseph Kidake from Kaimosi University and Francis Njeru from Multimedia University are the key contenders.
Meanwhile, the position of Secretary General has attracted Joan Auma of Maseno University, Geoffrey Barasa of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Anthony Mwanzia of the Technical University of Mombasa, and Dr. Daniel Njenga of Kenyatta University.
Other important positions include Deputy Secretary General, where Hellen Ng’ethe of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) will face off against Joseph Ndiku of Machakos University. The Public Relations Officer role has two candidates: Hillary Mukasa from Kenya Methodist University and Ali Mbaraka from Moi University.
Interestingly, the position of Treasurer is uncontested, with Kithuka, the former Assistant Treasurer, poised to take the role. This year’s election will see only 40 universities participate in the voting process. These universities form the core of KUSA’s membership and will be critical in shaping the association’s future leadership and vision.
The elections also come at a time when the association is undergoing significant reforms. A key agenda point for the incoming leadership will be the transformation of KUSA into the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF).
