Siaya County is set to host a historic event on January 2 2025, as Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will witness the grand opening of the newly constructed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium.

The event will highlight a highly anticipated friendly match between record Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions Gor Mahia and Uganda’s FUFA Big League champions Kitara FC.

Siaya Governor James Orengo confirmed the announcement in a social media post following a meeting with Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo. Governor Orengo stated,

“Central to the discussion was the upcoming Piny Luo Cultural and Sports Festival and the official opening of our stadium in Siaya, where we will be hosting the President H.E. William Samoei Ruto and the President of Uganda H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.”

Initially, Gor Mahia was scheduled to face Tanzanian giants Yanga SC. However, Yanga withdrew from the fixture due to their CAF Champions League group-stage match against TP Mazembe of DR Congo slated for the same week. Kitara FC, winners of the 2023/24 Stanbic Uganda Cup, stepped in as worthy replacements.

Kitara FC heads into the fixture with momentum, fresh from a stunning 7-0 victory over Express FC in the Uganda Premier League, where they currently sit 9th on the table. Gor Mahia, on the other hand, is currently 4th in the FKF Premier League standings, just three points off the top spot with a game in hand.

The match, part of the Piny Luo Cultural and Sports Festival, is slated to kick off at 3:00 PM.
