Gor Mahia head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has urged his players to work for their slots in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The competition was scheduled to take place in February but has since been postponed to August and Zico believes the rescheduling gives local players, especially those from his club, more time to showcase what they can do.

“For our players, it was going to be a big opportunity to showcase what they can do in Africa’s second biggest stage. Now that the tournament has been postponed, they have to reignite themselves, focus and try to impress the selectors of the national team to be selected,” Zico said to the club’s media team.
The tactician, who doubles up as the national team assistant coach believes that his club is capable of providing the national team with players as he seeks to replicate what happened in the 1997 All-Africa Games.
“We are hoping to produce more players for the national team. In 1997 when we were playing the All Africa Games, Gor Mahia had nine players in the national team and that is what we want to replicate this time again,” he added.

There have been a lot of speculations on the players the team should be signing in the forthcoming transfer window but Zico remained tight-lipped about his plans.
“Right now, we are focusing on the team we have because the window is not yet opened. We have to wait until the window is opened but as of now we are comfortable with the squad we have and everyone is trying to do his best for the club,” he opined.
Gor Mahia have a date against league leaders Tusker FC in what will be the game of round 16 as they seek to topple their opponents in their bid to defend the title.
