Gor Mahia center back Kennedy Onyango has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a serious injury during their 1-0 win over KCB FC.

The towering defender, who previously featured for Nairobi City Stars, endured a complete fracture of the tibia and fibula bones, with the club doctor, Fred Nyakwaka, confirming the same just minutes after the player was stretched off. The player who was substituted in the 9th minute was replaced by the club’s assistant captain, Geoffrey Ochieng.

It’s a devastating blow for both the player and the club, especially with Gor Mahia in the thick of the title race. After the game, the club’s head Coach, Sinisa Mihajlović, took to social media to share an emotional message for his player, expressing his support

“Dear Kennedy, I am extremely sad and very sorry for your injury. I believe that you will recover quickly, considering that you are an awesome man, considering your strength and will. We are all with you and today’s victory is proof of that. A gift for you. We continue the journey without you, but you will be with us in the fight for the championship. We love you, Kennedy,” Sinisa said.

Gor Mahia’s narrow win over the Bankers has now brought them within touching distance of the summit. The defending champions sit third on the FKF Premier League log with 46 points, just three shy of leaders Kenya Police, who have 49. Tusker FC occupy second place with 48 points.

With a game in hand against arch-rivals AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia will now aim to honor their injured teammate by pushing in the title race.
