Kenyan midfielder Philip Mayaka has signed a deal with Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC for an undisclosed period.

The midfielder has been a free agent since leaving Colorado Rapids at the end of 2022 and while the period of his new deal wasn’t disclosed by the club, it is believed that he has signed a two-year deal.

In a statement, the club noted: “Charlotte FC today announced Philip Mayaka, Ethan Dudley, and Gurman Sangha have signed MLS NEXT Pro contracts with the Club.”

Mayaka spent two seasons with the Colorado Rapids and joins two former Tigers in goalkeeper George Marks and fellow midfielder Quinn McNeill on Charlotte’s roster.

Before being drafted third overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids as a Generation Adidas signee, the midfielder spent two seasons with the Tigers under head coach Mike Noonan and was named a First Team All-ACC member (2019 and 2020), 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year and a 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy finalist.

In his two seasons at Clemson, Mayaka tallied two goals, eight assists, and 12 points off of 45 shots in 32 game appearances (29 starts) and 2,619 minutes of play.

In September 2021, Mayaka was called up to the provisional Harambee Stars squad ahead of back-to-back FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Mali.
