Atletico Madrid has announced the signing of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea on a five-year deal.
The England midfielder joined the West London club at the age of eight and made 95 appearances after his debut in 2022, but has now left for a £33.7million fee after being deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Enzo Maresca.
On signing the player, the Laliga club said; “Atlético de Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the transfer of Conor Gallagher, who has signed for our club until 2029. The player, born in England in 2000, is a full international for his country and plays as a midfielder.
“Gallagher joined Chelsea’s academy at just eight years old. After more than a decade in the club’s youth system, he left on loan to Charlton Athletic in 2019, where he made 26 appearances, scoring six goals and providing four assists. This spell was followed by loan spells to Swansea City (21 appearances and seven assists), West Bromwich Albion (32 appearances, two goals and two assists) and Crystal Palace (39 appearances, eight goals and five assists), where he was named the team’s player of the season. He made his debut for Chelsea’s first team in August 2022 and has since made 95 appearances for the London club, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists.”
The midfielder made his senior England debut in November 2021 and was called up for the 2022 World Cup and this year’s European Championship, a competition in which he was a finalist. He has made 18 appearances for his country’s senior team to date.
