Immediate former Harambee Stars manager Engin Firat has been linked with a return to Iran.

The Turkish-born tactician had been sent home late last year following the ascendency of Hussein Mohammed to the Football Kenya Federation Presidency and has been jobless since.

Turkish tabloid Turkhaber now reports that Iranian side Esteghlal FC want to rope Firat as their new technical director after their rivals Persepolis employed another Turkish Ismail Kartal in the same position.

According to the tabloid, Firat has expressed his desire to work in Iran again having been in the country before as their national team assistant coach (between 2007-08), head coach of Sepahan and Saipa. He beat Persepolis 1-0 and 3-0 in one season while he was the manager of Saipa.

“I love Iran very much and I will work again,” Firat is quoted. “I am planning to rest now because I just left (Kenya). However, everything can change very quickly in football. I have received a few official offers, especially from Asia and Africa. There are always offers from Iran. I love there very much and I will work again in the future.”

Firat achieved the longest away unbeaten streak in Kenyan history by not losing eight consecutive matches but was dismissed with fans questioning his ambitions in matches that mattered.
