Mombasa United’s dream start to the 2025/26 National Super League (NSL) season rolled on as they came from behind to beat Darajani Gogo 2-1 in a fiery clash at Mbaraki Sports Club on Monday, November 10.

The coastal outfit, under coach Gilbert Selebwa, showed character to overturn the first-half deficit and maintain their charge at the top of the NSL table. The 2-1 victory lifted Mombasa United to 16 points, level with league leaders Migori Youth, who stay top on goal difference.

Darajani Gogo drew first blood and was rewarded in the 20th minute when Edward Adem fired them into the lead. The game’s intensity spiked just before halftime when Gogo’s winger Emmanuel Ochieng was shown a second yellow card for time-wasting, reducing them to 10 men. The visitors managed to hold onto their 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

After the restart, Mombasa United came out with renewed determination. Juma Mwajao restored parity with a well-taken finish before Neville Etabale completed the turnaround, sending the Mbaraki faithful into celebration. United, however, also finished the game with 10 men after defender Hakim Ingosi was sent off in the 85th minute for obstructing the opposing goalkeeper from taking a quick restart.

The result also extended Selebwa’s unbeaten run to three matches since their 3K FC defeat in Embu. For Darajani Gogo, the loss marked their second defeat of the campaign, leaving them 11th on the log with seven points from five matches.

Speaking after the match, Gogo fitness trainer Kelly Ogutu expressed frustration over what he termed “poor officiating,” though he praised his side’s spirit.

“The kind of officiating we got today was not the best, but that’s football. When you’re away, you sometimes get such decisions. I believe the boys will bounce back against Mwatate over the weekend,” Ogutu said.

Despite the setback, Ogutu lauded his team’s effort, especially after going a man down before halftime.

“It was a good game; we stuck to our plan and created several chances. The red card changed the rhythm, but I’m proud of the players’ resilience. This is a young, talented, and skillful squad, and the future is bright,” he added.

Mombasa United will look to keep their unbeaten run alive when they travel to face Mombasa Elite, while Darajani Gogo hope to bounce back at home against Mwatate United this weekend.
