Both sides struggled to create meaningful chances in the opening minutes apart from Wycliffe Omondi’s tame header from a Humphrey Obina free kick, which was ruled out for offside. Shabana continued to enjoy more possession in the earlier proceedings but couldn’t turn their chances to goals.
Tge tide was to turn in the 38th minute when Okoth found space after an exchange of play with Brian Ouru and John Nyawir, producing a moment of brilliance, a stunning strike from distance, beating Shabana Goalkeeper Maxwell Mulili and giving the Slum Boys a lead heading into halftime.

Shabana started brighter after the restart; however, despite the sustained pressure, Mathare’s defence stood firm, frustrating Shabana’s attempts to level the score. In the 52nd minute, Elli Asieche was booked for a clumsy challenge on Wycliffe Omondi, but nothing came from the ensuing free kick.
At the hour mark, Okidi introduced Justus Munika and Victor Omondi for Derrick Otieno and Justine Omwando to try and salvage a point. However, Mathare United Head Coach John Kamau responded by introducing Derrick Anami to replace Meshack Ochieno and Donald Ange for Okoth.

The glamour boys pressed forward relentlessly, but the visitors’ disciplined defending and a series of amazing saves from Mathare’s young goalkeeper, Ouru, kept them at bay. The win, which is Mathare’s second of the campaign, sees Shabana drop to third place on seven points, level with Mathare United, who now sit fourth due to inferior goal difference. Shabana will host AFC Leopards in a midweek SportPesa Premier League match on Wednesday, October 29. Leopards secured their first win of the season with a victory over KCB on Saturday afternoon.
