The best-performing player and coach in Kenya’s top-flight Sportpesa Premier League are set to receive monthly recognition and reward for their performing beginning this October.

The league’s main sponsor, online gaming firm SportPesa, is set to collaborate with data company Tisini to identify the monthly best-performing players and coaches. The data will highlight top performers, team performances and overall pre- and post-game analysis, providing valuable insight into the league’s progress. The best player and coach of the month will be awarded as part of the sponsor’s broader plan to make the Sportpesa Premier League more competitive and enhance its overall quality.

Japheth Akhulia, SportPesa Partnership and Sponsorships manager, said that the initiative intends to create a culture of competition and accountability in the league through data-driven recognition and to raise the quality of local football.

He further stated that the awards are not just about competition but also about building a strong foundation for the national team. “I believe the Harambee Stars head coach McCarthy will have a good problem with too many players performing well and competing for places in the national team with the availability of statistics and monthly awards,” Akhulia said.

The introduction of these monthly awards marks yet another milestone in the Sportpesa Premier League. There has not been a consistent monthly award system in recent years, but one-off or intermittent monthly awards have been given in the past.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) awarded the Player of the Month for various months during the 2020/21 season, with the last recorded being July 2021. Tusker FC announced its own internal “Player of the Month” for March 2025.
