Four-time FKF Women’s Premier League Champions, Vihiga Queens Football Club, are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, marking a decade of remarkable achievements both on and off the pitch.
As part of the celebrations, the club has organized a series of preseason-friendly matches, bringing together top teams from across East Africa.
From September 5th to 7th, Vihiga Queens will play host to Kampala Queens WFC from Uganda and JKT Queens from Tanzania at the Mumias Sports Complex. These matches are not just a showcase of talent but also a testament to the club’s enduring legacy and commitment to fostering regional partnerships in women’s football.
Vihiga Queens Chairman Michael Senelwa shared his thoughts on the anniversary dubbed ‘Vihiga Queens Kumi Bora’ and the importance of the event: “To our coaches, this will serve as a preparation for our squad ahead of the upcoming season. This also opens opportunities for partnerships in player transfers between the three teams.” Said Senelwa.
“We are bringing together three countries, which might open doors for our players to go abroad, it doesn’t necessarily have to be just Uganda or Tanzania because with the three nations coming together we exchange ideas on making progress through linkages on player sales abroad,” he added.
Confirming their participation, JKT Queens officials, led by the club’s coach Ester Chaburuka, expressed their excitement: “We are grateful for the invitation from Vihiga Queens. We have many teams in Tanzania, but the fact that they chose us shows we are a big club. I urge Vihiga Queens fans to come out in good numbers to watch our teams face off. My players are excited about this, and we will be using this tournament as preseason preparation for our side.”
JKT Queens captain Anastezia Katuni, who was also featured in the Tanzania Women’s Premier League Team of the Season in the just-concluded season, added:
“We have many teams in our league, but receiving this invitation as JKT Queens is a great motivation for my teammates, it shows our quality. Vihiga Queens is a strong side; we’ve faced them before in the CECAFA Club Championships, and I believe that’s one of the reasons why they chose us.”
The friendly matches are scheduled as follows:
-5th September, Thursday: Vihiga Queens FC vs Kampala Queens | 1 PM
-6th September, Friday: Kampala Queens vs JKT Queens | 1 pm
-7th September, Saturday: Vihiga Queens vs JKT Queens | 1 PM
