Aston Villa opened year 2023 with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League clash staged at the Tottenham Stadium.
The two second-half goals temporarily halted the north London club’s pursuit of Manchester United and fourth place on the Premier League table. Argentine Emiliano Buendia hit home in the 50th minute for Villa, with Douglas Luiz doubling the lead in the 23rd minute.
A flurry of substitutions by Spurs manager Antonio Conte late in the game failed to redress the balance or pull back any goals for the home side.

The win gave Emery his third win since taking over from Steven Gerrard as Villa boss – including two from two on the road. The result has left Spurs in the fifth spot in the Premier League table, two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, having played a game more than the Red Devils, while Villa is 12th, boasting 21 points from their opening 17 games of the campaign.
Next up for Spurs in the Premier League is a trip to Crystal Palace on Wednesday, while Villa will be bidding to build on the strong result when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers on the same night.
