In October 2022, Kenyan international attacker Judith Atieno took a leap of faith when she ditched Mathare United Women for Rayon Sports Women team of Rwanda.

At her time of departure, she was the captain of Mathare but moved to the Rwandese side who at that time were playing in the second tier. Her record at Mathare had seen her score 13 goals in 11 games that season with the fast-growing team having signed her for one year with a promise of another if she was to replicate her goal-scoring prowess.

With the dream of promotion to the first tier having been sold to her, she hit the ground running and ended her debut season in Rwanda with 37 goals and 17 assists as they gained promotion to the Rwandese top tier; for a team that was only formed in 2022, this was a rapid rise.

Fast forward to, Atieno was part of the Rayon side who were crowned the Champions of the 2023/2024 Rwanda Women’s National League last weekend.

In what was their debut season in the top flight, Rayon beat Muhazi United WFC 1-0 on Saturday to lift the title by 58 points. Jeanine Mukandayisenga netted the lone goal after 66 minutes in a match played at the Aee Avesa grounds.

With the win, Rayon Sport WFC will now represent Rwanda at the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Zone qualifiers which will take place later this year in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
