The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has picked Morocco as the host of this CAF Women’s Champions League Finals.

Scheduled for November 9th to 23rd, 2024, the tournament will feature the top eight women’s clubs on the continent, competing for significant prize money.

The tournament offers lucrative rewards, with the winner set to receive USD 400,000 (approximately Ksh 51.9 million), while the runner-up will pocket USD 250,000 (around Ksh 32.5 million). Unfortunately for Kenyan clubs, none have qualified for this prestigious tournament, meaning they miss out on these substantial financial rewards.

Ethiopia’s CBE FC will represent the CECAFA region in Morocco, having qualified after defeating debutants Kenya Police Bullets FC in the finals of the CECAFA regional qualifiers in August 2024.

Kenyan clubs have struggled to make a mark in this competition, with Vihiga Queens being the only Kenyan side to have ever participated in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

In the inaugural edition held in Egypt in 2021, Vihiga Queens represented Kenya but were eliminated in the group stages by eventual champions Mamelodi Sundowns.  Vihiga Queens’ elimination against the South African giants highlights the competitive nature of the tournament and the growing gap between top African clubs and Kenyan teams.

The lack of Kenyan participation in this year’s tournament underscores the challenges Kenyan women’s football faces in competing at the highest levels of the continent. Despite producing talent, missing out on such tournaments means losing not only financial benefits but also valuable exposure and experience on the continental stage.

As Kenyan clubs look ahead to future tournaments, the success of other regional teams like CBE FC and the financial incentives at stake serve as motivation to close the gap and potentially return to the CAF Women’s Champions League in the coming years.

This year’s edition will have the following participants;

  • Holders: Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa)
  • Host: ASFAR (Morocco)
  • WAFU A: Aigles de la Medina (Senegal)
  • WAFU B: EDO Queens (Nigeria)
  • COSAFA: University of Western Cape (South Africa)
  • UNAF: Tutankhamun (Egypt)
  • CECAFA:  CBE FC (Ethiopia)
  • UNIFFAC: TP Mazembe (DR Congo)
