CECAFA referees after a training for the CECAFA U17 AFCON Qualifiers

Kenyan referees are among 24 officials who have been picked to officiate at the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers of the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ethiopia.

The tournament will take place from November 15th to December 2nd at in the towns of Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa with the Kenya U17 team already in the nation as they seek to qualify for the continental showpiece.

The Kenyan contingent in the officiating department will be represented by Boniface Karanja and Moses Osano who have been picked as a referee and an instructor respectively.

“They have undergone physical tests and a pre-competition course since arriving in Addis Ababa, and are ready to start officiating matches,” Ali Ahmed, the CECAFA head of refereeing is quoted by the region’s portal.

The opening match of the tournament will take place on Saturday November 15th and will be between Somalia and South Sudan at the Abebe Bikila Stadium while Rwanda will take on hosts Ethiopia in the second match.

The best two teams from each group will qualify to play in the semi-final stage. The losers at the semi-final stage will tussle it out for the bronze medal, while the winner play in the final. The champions, first runner up and second runner up will qualify to represent the CECAFA Zone at the TotalEnergies AFCON 2026.
