Gor Mahia continued their fine run in the SportPesa Premier League with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Mathare United at the MISC Kasarani on Wednesday afternoon.

The game needed some spark after a slow start, and it was provided in the 13th minute when Patrick Essombe missed a glorious opportunity to put Gor in the lead after being presented with a huge chance following Shariff Musa’s cross had landed on his path with only the net at his mercy.

The Cameroon midfielder was again to blame when Gor had a second chance. This time, Essombe blocked Austine Odhiambo’s goal-bound shot after colliding with keeper Kevin Ouru in the Mathare goal.

Essombe was to be third time unlucky when, after beating his markers in the opposing defence, he failed to hit the target, much to the amazement of his bench. With Mathare resorting to sitting back and waiting for their opponents on the counter, both teams failed to get the better of the other in the first half.

Gor Mahia continued from where they left off on restart and were rewarded three minutes into the second half when Shariff got on the end of an inch-perfect cross from Paul Ochuoga to tap from close range for the lead.

The goal seems to have woken United up, where they attacked more in the closing stages of the game with Musa Masika forcing Bryne Omondi to a fine save seven minutes from time as they looked for an equaliser; the effort, parried by Bryne, resulted in Mathare’s first corner kick of the afternoon.

While they prodded, Mathare left holes at the back and were duly punished in stoppage time when substitute Bryson Wangai sealed the points for Mahia with a goal, with what was virtually the last kick of the game.
