Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has explained why he handed call-ups to three new players who are based away from Kenya for the next tests against Burundi and Ivory Coast.

Firat handed first calls to Adam Wilson of Bradford, Tobias Knost who is based in Germany with SV Verl and Bruce Kamau who is based in Australia where he represents Perth Glory. According to the tactician, the trio have the quality needed to boost his side for their crucial tests in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

“Adam Wilson has played for the England U18 team. Tobias Knost played for the Germany U18 team, and Bruce Kamau is experienced and at the top level. These are Kenyan players with quality and potential who deserve a chance to show us what they can offer,” Firat is quoted by the Federation’s portal.

Firat further waged in the incident that saw him drop defender Abud Omar and midfielder Eric Johanna in Stars’ last test where it was reported that they had an altercation in the team’s camp a day before leaving for Malawi.

“I was unhappy about their discipline. Nonetheless, they know how to conduct themselves in the national team. I won’t close the door. Now they can show that they deserve to be here,” he added.

Stars are scheduled to take on Burundi on June 7, 2024, before facing the reigning Africa Cup of Nations winners, Ivory Coast, four days later with all the games set to be staged in Malawi.

This move has been occasioned by the unavailability of the Nyayo National Stadium and the Kasarani Stadium which are under renovation ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya shall jointly co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
